Comprehensive Solution of Steel Slag Treatment and Grinding in HCM Grinding Mill

Release date: 2026-01-14

 Use of steel slag

This solution leverages HCM's three decades of expertise in powder grinding equipment R&D and industrial solid waste management. Addressing the challenges of massive steel slag emissions, low resource utilization rates, and low added value in steel enterprises, it integrates a full-chain technology encompassing "steel slag pretreatment, efficient scrap steel recovery, graded grinding, and high-value applications." The core equipment, including HCM's HLM series vertical grinding mills, achieves 100% resource utilization of steel slag. This process not only recycles high-grade scrap steel for steelmaking but also produces premium steel slag micro-powder for the construction industry, helping enterprises reduce costs, improve efficiency, and achieve green transformation. The solution aligns with China's "dual carbon" goals and industrial solid waste resource utilization policies.

1.Core Objectives of the Plan:

1-1. Resource Recovery: Achieve a scrap steel recovery rate of ≥95% in steel slag, produce slag steel blocks with iron content ≥80%, iron concentrate with ≥45% grade, and ensure total iron content in tailings ≤3%, realizing the goal of 'maximizing utilization'.

1-2. High-value utilization: Steel slag tailings are processed into fine powder with a specific surface area of 450-550 m²/kg, which can be used as high-value-added products such as cement admixtures and concrete mixers.

1-3. Energy efficiency: Leveraging the "multi-functional integration" feature of Hongcheng HLM vertical mill, the grinding system consumes 38kW h/t, achieving over 30% energy savings compared to traditional ball milling processes and significantly reducing comprehensive energy consumption per ton of steel.

1-4. Environmental Compliance: The closed-loop design ensures dust emissions ≤10mg/m³ and noise ≤85dB, meeting the "Ultra-Low Emission Grade A" standard to resolve steel slag storage pollution.

2. Core Process Route: Steel Slag Pretreatment → Scrap Steel Recovery → Grading and Grinding → Finished Product Application

This solution employs a synergistic process of "pre-treatment + multi-stage separation + precision grinding", leveraging the technical advantages of HCM grinding equipment to meet the needs of steel enterprises of varying scales (with an annual output of 200,000-1.5 million tons of steel slag). The specific workflow is as follows:

To address the characteristics of high-temperature steel slag (1200-1600℃) which is prone to weathering and has unstable volume, a combined process of "thermal quenching cooling + pre-crushing" was adopted to balance stability and crushing efficiency.

1-1.Hot Stabilization Process: Freshly produced steel slag is loaded into a sealed hot stabilization tank. By precisely controlling water injection temperature and duration, the f-CaO in the slag is rapidly decomposed to achieve stabilization. The principle of thermal expansion and contraction is utilized to naturally pulverize the slag, facilitating subsequent slag-iron separation. This process improves slag cooling efficiency by 60% and reduces the treatment cycle from 7 days in traditional methods to just 1 day.

1-2 Pre-crushing + Screening: The stabilized steel slag undergoes coarse crushing in a jaw crusher, followed by intermediate crushing in a impact crusher. A vibrating screen is then used to separate the slag into three particle size fractions: ≥250mm, 40-250mm, and 0-40mm. The ≥250mm coarse slag is further crushed by a drop hammer and re-screened to ensure the feed particle size meets the requirements for subsequent magnetic separation and grinding processes.

Step 2: Efficient Scrap Steel Recycling-Multi-stage Magnetic Separation + Deep Sorting to Improve Recycling Value.

Step 3: Steel Slag Tailings Grinding-Core Equipment Support, Realizing High Value Transformation

The tailings from scrap steel recycling (total iron content ≤3%) are processed as grinding material. Based on end-product requirements, the HCM core grinding equipment is used for classification. The recommended core equipment includes the HLM series vertical mill (for large-scale production) and HC series Raymond mill (for medium and small-scale production). HCM steel slag vertical mill

1. Core Equipment Selection and Advantages:

HLM Series Vertical Mill (Main Model) -This integrated system combines crushing, grinding, drying, classification, and conveying functions, designed for steel slag micro-powder projects with an annual output of 200,000-1,500,000 tons. It processes wet materials with 15% moisture content without requiring additional drying equipment. By adjusting the classifier speed and grinding pressure, the product fineness can be flexibly controlled between 80-2,500 mesh (specific surface area: 450-700 m²/kg), meeting diverse construction material requirements. Featuring an innovative grinding zone structure and high-pressure low-grinding technology, the system consumes ≤38 kWh/t (reference range), demonstrating significant energy efficiency compared to traditional processes. Its superior sealing performance effectively prevents dust leakage.

The HC Series Raymond Mill (Supplementary Model) is designed for small-to-medium scale projects with an annual output of 50,000-200,000 tons. It produces finished products with a particle size of 80-400 mesh and a capacity of 2-13 tons per hour. Featuring compact footprint, user-friendly operation, and low maintenance costs, this mill is ideal for supporting small-to-medium steel enterprises or building material plants.

2. Pulverization Process Flow 1-1. Feeding Stage: The iron-removed steel slag tailings are conveyed by a sealed belt to the mill's feed opening, where a cutter ensures uniform feeding to maintain stable mill operation.

1-2. Grinding and Drying Process: Upon entering the HLM vertical mill, the material is crushed under high-pressure action from the grinding rollers and grinding plate. Simultaneously, hot air from the hot blast stove enters the mill, enabling simultaneous drying and grinding. The dried material has a moisture content of 1% (reference range).

3. Grading and collection process: The ground material enters the classifier with the airflow. Unqualified coarse powder is separated and returned to the mill for re-grinding, while qualified fine powder is collected by the dust collector to form finished steel slag micro-powder. The exhaust gas is purified and discharged in compliance with standards.
